He
devoted his scholarly life to the study of the second half of the 20th
century focusing on the immense influence of government (its policies and
institutions) on shaping the economy, a view that was vindicated by The Great
Meltdown which coincided with his protracted struggle with vascular dementia.
He was laid to rest in Highgate justly near such other luminaries as Karl
Marx, Michael Faraday, and Henry Moore.
Alan was among the first to do serious research on the Nazi war economy and
continued to write eminal books like others write articles: on the fascist
economy in Norway, on the European rescue of the nation state, on the
economic history of the Second World War, on European reconstruction, on the
British economy, particularly British policy toward the EU, and then on the
European union, community, and integration most of which have become classics
in their respective areas.
Born in the Midlands of humble origins, Alan taught at the best institutions
and received many honors and awards. His was an incredible life full of
incredible achievements. Alan has left a gaping hole in the economic history
profession as well as in the heart of his friends, three daughters and wife,
Frances M.B. Lynch, an economic historian of modern France.
