RN 14: Gender Relations in the Labour Market and the Welfare State
In the aftermath of the 'credit crunch', European economies have been
experiencing recessions and economic turmoil. Although some countries have
already suggested that they have overcome the recession, most nations are
still experiencing high unemployment, triggering fear of jobless growth and
economic and social problems resulting from high base unemployment. In
parallel, the decline of public services means that those facing risk in the
labour market are less supported economically and socially. There are
indications that a range of sectors, occupations and individuals are
affected by the increase in insecurity but past experiences show that women
can bear the brunt of economic change, for example by being pushed into a
'reserve army of labour' or into increasingly insecure and flexible
employment. What impact does the current/recent recession have across
Europe? Are older workers especially affected? Do economic and policy
responses to these 'turbulent times' increase pressure on women and/or men
in combining work and life? What support is still available to them? How are
welfare states changing in response to the developments and what are the
implications for women, men, and especially working parents?
We invite papers to address all these issues and call for the submission of
abstracts.
Abstracts will only be accepted through completion of the online submission
form, and submission in any other form will be declined. The Online Abstract
Submission form and Instructions and Guidelines for Online Abstract
Submissions are available on the conference website: www.esa10thconference.com
The deadline for web submission of abstracts is Friday 25 February 2011.
If you are interested in putting together a whole session (up to four
papers) or in chairing a session at the conference, please get in touch with
the research network organisers.
