Call for Papers:
The scientific program on Business Organizations in Europe XIX-XXth c. carried by the Universities of Paris 1 Sorbonne and Paris 13 has held a first meeting in June 2010. The numerous contributions and papers were all devoted to better understand the meanings, translation, historiography and archives of the Business and Trade Organizations in Europe which are major components of the present changing social model as well as part of democratic States still in the process of construction.
The second meeting of the research agenda will be held the 9th and 10th of June 2011 at both Universities of Paris 13 and Paris 1 Sorbonne. The aims of the symposium are to study the genesis, historic forms and structures of trade and business organizations in Europe.
Preferred topics or paper submission are expected to address the following themes:
Roots, early stages and specific framework underlying business and trade organizations. Specifically - What strategies have been adopted for the promotion and defense of entrepreneurs and managers: unions, professional societies, chambers and trade organizations, clubs, miscellaneous groups, etc.? - In what historical context, for what reasons, and where (ie. were they local or nationwide)? - Have these organizations been driven and/or curbed by ideological, social, political, or judicial actions?
Speakers are encouraged to adopt a comparative perspective covering both time and space and to cover failures as well as successes.
Business and Trade Organizations at work. How did these organizations perform? That is, how were they managed, how many employees, and who were they, who managed them, how were they funded? - What were the relations of these organizations with the members of the unions? - How did the business organizations interact with each other? - What was their geographical distribution?
Finances. What were the sources of income and how much did they collect from their members? - What were the other sources of assets (in other words what was their degree of independence)? - How did they use this money and how much did they spend for lobbying operations ?
Assessment of membership: How difficult is it difficult to determine how many members joined the business associations? - Was there a connection between the representativeness of these organizations and the number of affiliates? - What were the dominant features, the core and the limits of this representativeness? - Did these business organizations truly act for collective purposes and interests?
Mapped information will be welcome.
