Jornadas do Mar na Escola Naval da Marinha Portuguesa: The new era of the discoveries

INTRODUCTION:
a. In “Jornadas do Mar”, an initiative of the Naval Academy, our goal is to promote the generic study of the Oceans, highlighting its role in the past and present, and foreseeing its use in the future. The next one will take place in the week of 08-12 November 2010 with the theme “THE NEW ERA OF THE DISCOVERIES”. b. This initiative, aimed at students of tertiary education, intends to provide a stimulus for presentations and guided theme discussions, among pupils of different institutions and personalities linked to various areas under debate.

2. THEMES
a. “Jornadas do Mar – The New Era of the Discoveries” will be appropriate to all the academic papers covering the following fields:
- Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Engineering
- Geography, Oceanography and Environment
- History and Sociology
- Economy and Management
- International Relations, Law and Strategy
- Literature and Linguistics
- Information and Communication Technology
- Military Sciences


3. ACCOMPLISHMENT
a. “Jornadas do Mar” will take place at the Naval Academy with the general programme indicated in paragraph 8;
b. The detailed programme will be distributed to the participants and will be available on the following Internet address: www.marinha.pt/escolanaval
c. “Jornadas do Mar” will involve plenary sessions of presentations by students and round table discussions on specific subjects;
d. If the number of papers chosen justify it, the plenary sessions could be divided into theme sessions to run simultaneously;
e. The papers will have to be presented by their authors, with a duration of 20 minutes, followed by a period of 10 minutes for questions and clarification. If the author of a paper is unable to attend, the paper may be presented by a chosen representative;
f. Apart from attending and participating in the sessions of “Jornadas do Mar”, the participants will have the chance to visit various units linked to history, research and sea technologies, as well as attend other cultural and social events organized by the Naval Academy;

4. PARTICIPATION AND REGISTRATIONS
a. All pupils of tertiary education institutions are invited. Therefore, registrations are open to:
(1) All pupils enrolled in higher education, with or without a paper:
First group: Graduated Studies (degree)
Second group: Postgraduates Studies
(2) Professores who want to accompany and guide students or to participate in the programmed activities.
b. The registrations for papers can be made from 03 May to 10 September 2010 and directed to the Naval Academy in one of the following ways:
(1) Registration form attached to the brochure, sent to the “Secretariado”(registry office) via post or fax;
(2) By email: jornadasdomarmarinha.pt, with the identification information found in the registration form;
c. In the case of collective participation, one of the members of each participating group will have to be identified as such to the “Secretariado” of the “Jornadas do Mar”;
d. The theme area will have to be indicated by each participant where the work is entered;
e. After 10 September and up to 29 October 2010, registrations for participation without a paper could be accepted;
f. The Naval Academy will provide free daily transport from Terreiro do Paço to the Naval Academy and return. The schedule will be announced;
g. The Naval Academy will supply free meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in its facilities, to the participants who require it;
h. Limited to its capacity, the Naval Academy will supply free lodging to the participating students and professors. Requests must be submitted in advance and preference will be given to pupils from outside the Lisbon area who are presenting papers;
i. The Naval Academy will organize social and cultural activities, which will be open to persons accompanying the participants.

5. PAPERS: PROCESSING AND SENDING

a. A Scientific Committee will act to evaluate and select the papers to be presented;
b. The participants will have to send, up to 15 September 2010, summaries of the papers with a maximum size of one A4 page, not exceeding 2.500 characters. The selection will be made by the Scientific Committee and the results will be communicated to the respective authors and published on the Internet, in the “Jornadas do Mar” page;
c. A copy of the final version of the paper will have to be delivered to the “Secretariado” by 18 October 2010. The document must not exceed 25 pages, with up to 2.500 characters/page and delivered on paper and digital support;
d. At a later date, the papers which were accepted will be published and divulged in the minutes of the “Jornadas do Mar”. These will be distributed freely to the students who presented papers, and to all represented institutions;
e. In the case of the presentation of papers in multimedia support they will have to be elaborated by the authors into a small text, describing the work which will be in the minutes of the “Jornadas do Mar”.

6. CERTIFICATES AND PRIZES
a. All students participating in the conference will receive a certificate of participation;
b. At the end of the conference a jury chosen by the Scientific Committee will award each theme area, prizes in the value of 1500€ (a thousand five hundred euros);

NOTE:

An alternative option to the cash prizes could be a trip on the ships “Sagres” or “Creoula” during the year of 2011, at the expense of the Portuguese Navy.

c. The jury reserves the right to not give prizes to any of the theme areas, if the quality of the work does not jusify it;
d. To the authors of the papers not awarded a prize, but considered by the Scientific Committee as one of quality, special certificates and trophies will be given;
e. The attribution of the trophies on the part of the Scientific Committee is made only on the basis of the written work. Nevertheless, public presentation of the work is essential for consideration as a prize-winner.

7. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

a. Honorary Committee
b. Presided over by his Excellency, the President of the Republic of Portugal, the following entities integrate the Honorary Committee:
· President of the Republic of Portugal
· Minister of National Defence
· Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education
· Secretary of State of National Defence and Maritime Affairs
· Admiral of the Fleet
· General Chairman of the Board of the Foundation of Portuguese Universities
· National Chairman of the Board of Evaluation of Tertiary Education
· President of the Naval Academy
· Director-General of the Hidrographic Institute
· President of the Naval Reserve Officers’ Association
c. Scientific Committee
This will be made up of personalities of recognized merit, linked to tertiary educational establishments, as well as other scientific institutions linked to the subject matter covered in the conference. This subject matter will be divulged opportunely.
The President of the Scientific Committee will be elected by his peers.

d. Executive Committee and “Secretariado”
The Executive Committee is presided over by Rear Admiral (Retired) António José Ravasco Bossa Dionísio and will work in the Naval Academy.
