Human Capital in Economic History: Measurement, Determinants and Implications.
Tuebingen, August 28-29, 2010 |
Call for papers
This twoday workshop focuses on the role of human capital and education in
economic history. Many different questions of human capital formation will
be addressed, for example:
- What caused rapid human capital development, what retarded it?
- Can we distinguish between schooling, cognitive abilities, and other
determinants?
- Is there a special role for selective migration in the human capital
formation process?
- What about inequalities, for example, between occupational groups and
genders?
- Are there implications on economic growth and other spheres of human
development?
- Are the expectations based on Unified Growth Theory (and other theories)
supported by the evidence?
- Are there special archival sources for human capital measurement that have
not been used before?
We expect to provide travel funding, lunches, and accommodation, supported
by the ESF GlobalEuroNet initiative, for some of the presenters. The number
of scholars who can participate is limited. Participants from countries
which financially support the ESF Programme (Austria, Belgium, Estonia,
Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden,
Switzerland, The Netherlands, Turkey) might be supported by those funds,
others by HIPOD (or own) funds. Hence scholars from other countries might
also be financially supported to a certain extent, and are certainly most
welcome as well! The involvement of young scholars is strongly encouraged.
The local organizing committee consists of Valeria Prayon, Yvonne Stolz,
Katharina Koberski, and Joerg Baten.
Papers or abstracts should be send to Joerg.baten@uni-tuebingen.de until Jan
15th, 2010 latest. All submissions will be acknowledged. Notices of
acceptance will be sent to corresponding authors by February 15th.
We look forward to an exciting workshop!
