Bachelor in Arts (History) in 1956 and PhD in History at the University of Barcelona in 1970. Professor of Economic History of the University of Barcelona. Chair of World and Spanish Economic History at the University of Valencia (1974). He moved to the Universidad Autónoma, Barcelona, and then became professor at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

He founded and directed the Institut d'Història Jaume Vicens Vives, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, in Barcelona. Also, he founded and contributed to the journals Recerques (1970) and l’Avenç (1976). Director of Historia Universal Planeta between 1991-1994. Member of the editorial board of the journal Sin Permiso.

Considered one of the most brilliant Spanish historians of the contemporary era, he has received major academic awards. Nacional de Cultura for his Trayectoria Profesional y Artística in 2007 from the Government of the Generalitat. Active member in numerous historical associations and president of the AEHE (Spanish Association of Economic History) between 2002-2005.

 

He has mainly specialized in the transition models, from the old regime to capitalism, taxation, and the Spanish public finance. He has also study the role of history and historians in contemporary societies.
