Bachelor in Arts -History- at the University of Barcelona. After further studies in Paris (1953) and Pavia (1953), he received his PhD in History from the University of Barcelona in 1957. Professor of Economic History of this University (1956-1967). He was appointed the Chair of Economic History at the University of Valencia (1968-1969). Professor of the Universidad Autónoma, Barcelona (1970-1980), of the University of Barcelona in 1981. Currently professor at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. |
Member of the Unión Internacional para el Estudio Científico de la Población since 1961, of the Comission de Démographie Historique (1961-68), and of the committee responsible for writing the demographic dictionary published by the United Nations. Selected academic awards: Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques from France, Gran Cruz de Alfonso X el Sabio, Medalla Narcis Monturiol for scientific and technological merit from the Generalitat of Catalonia, Premio de Investigación from the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca, Creu de San Jordi from Generalitat of Catalonia, Medalla de Honor from the UIMP (Internacional Menéndez Pelayo University), Medalla de oro for scientific merit from the Town hall of Barcelona. Premio Nacional de Investigación Pascual Madoz, in Derecho y Ciencias Económicas y Sociales (2004).
Founder of the AEHE (Asociación Española de Historia Económica) in collaboration with Jordi Nadal. President of the AEHE between 1994 and 1997. Currently honorary president and first president of the ADEH (Association of History Demography) from 1983 to 1991. Founder and director of the journal Historia Industrial in 1992.
He is one of the foremost historians specialized in historical demography and the history of the Spanish population, although his most important legacy is related to the history of the Spanish industrialization.
