The societies under COSCE are grouped in five memberships which represent the main scientific areas. AEHE corresponds to number 1 (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences). Next, see in detail the number of societies (in brackets) which make up the five memberships together with the document (DOC 1):

1. Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (5)
2. Mathematics, Physics and Physic Technologies, Chemistry and Chemical Technologies (9)
3. Life and health Sciences (27)
4. Earth Sciences, Agriculture and Environment (16)
5. Science and Technology of Materials and Information and Communication (6)

What are their activities? The main objective of COSCE are:
• Act as a qualified and unified partner, both in civil society itself as well as a representative government in matters related to science. In other words, COSCE acts as a pressure group (lobby) to the parliament and the corresponding organisms.
• Promote the role of science and contribute to its diffusion as a necessary and essential feature of culture. In this sense, committees have been created to develop activities and programs, so that numerous reports and projects have been published such as:

  • CRECE Action (Comisiones de Reflexión y Estudio de la Ciencia en España): Commissions for Reflection and the Study of Science in Spain. Through this restricted-access platform, member societies can express their views on the various papers which make up the CRECE report. The papers are:
    1) Structures and instruments of scientific policy
    2) Human resources in research
    3) Science and business: towards a dynamic ecosystem for Spanish innovation
    4) Spain in Europe
    5) Science and society.

  • DECIDES Program (Debates sobre Ciencia y Desarrollo en España): Debates on Science and Development in Spain, whose main purpose is to promote contact between the scientific community and the society to which it belongs. It is a long term task promoting the identification of scientific goals that allow real opportunities for economic, social, and knowledge development within Spanish society. The debate, initiated in expert circles, aims to spread into society, with the incorporation and participation of institutions, entities, and citizens.

  • PENCIENDE Project (Enseñanza de las Ciencias en la Didáctica Escolar): Teaching of Science at Schools. It refers to features such as: what should children learn about science? What do children want to learn about ...? What can children learn?

  • CONOCEROS Project. The establishment of an open programme of cooperation between the parliament and scientific societies to improve the knowledge and relationships between scientists and parliamentarians.
