El producto agrario en la España del siglo XVIII
El Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación acaba de confirmar a un grupo de profesores del Departamento de Historia e Instituciones Económicas II (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) la concesión de un proyecto de investigación del Plan Nacional de I+D+I (HAR2009-1243, el producto agrario y el saldo vegetativo en la España del siglo XVIII: Crecimiento Económico e Inestabilidad) para el trienio 2010-2012, cuyo Investigador Principal es Enrique Llopis.
Anexa a dicho proyecto también nos han concedido una beca FPI y queremos dar la máxima difusión a la oportunidad que la misma puede suponer para algún joven investigador.
Está prevista que la convocatoria sea para el próximo mes de enero y que el plazo de presentación de solicitudes sea sólo de quince días naturales. Aparte de los requisitos generales que pueden encontrarse en la web del MICINN (todavía los únicos accesibles corresponden a la convocatoria del pasado año), para nosotros es importante que los solicitantes, además de contar con un buen expediente, sean licenciados en Economía o en Historia y estén dispuestos a realizar una tesis doctoral en un tema estrechamente relacionado con el del proyecto concedido. Los conocimientos de Paleografía no son imprescindibles, pero sí pueden resultar decisivos en la elección cuando los aspirantes más valorados presenten CV's y proyectos de investigación de similar calidad.
-Los principales objetivos de este proyecto son:
1) reconstruir el movimiento
2) calcular la inestabilidad de algunas macromagnitudes esenciales para la medición y el análisis del crecimiento económico en la España del siglo XVIII.
-En concreto, nos proponemos:
a) establecer los movimientos del producto agrario, cerealista y no cerealista, para extensos territorios, a partir de los registros diezmales.
b) elaborar series locales de defunciones y de matrimonios, que nos permitan construir índices provinciales y regionales.
c) calcular los saldos vegetativos a distintas escalas territoriales y, basándonos en ellos y en la información que proporcionan los vecindarios y censos disponibles, estimar la intensidad de los movimientos migratorios.
d) calcular las variaciones en la intensidad de las fluctuaciones interanuales de un amplio conjunto de variables (producto agrario, precios, natalidad, mortalidad, crecimiento vegetativo y nupcialidad) para, a partir del resultado de dicho cálculo, analizar los efectos de la inestabilidad sobre el crecimiento y el cambio económicos.

Job Opening: Postdoc Positions for Historians or Economic Historians,
UPF, Barcelona
For an ERC-financed research project led by Hans-Joachim Voth on political uncertainty and asset returns in Europe, 1900-1950, we seek to hire two full-time postdoctoral researchers. Contracts are for two years, extendible by one year. Candidates should have extensive experience in archivalresearch, preferably on 20th century sources. Scholars with experience in database construction are preferred. To apply for one of these positions, you should be highly fluent in one of the following languages (in addition to having good English): German, Polish, Spanish, Russian, French. If you have worked with archival records in one of these languages, that would be an asset.

Three PhD studentships available for September 2010 entry at ULSM
The University of Leicester School of Management is delighted to be able to offer three PhD studentships, worth up to £17, 845 per year over three years. The studentships are for full-time study only and will commence in September 2010. They will cover tuition fees (at the UK/EU rate only) and include a stipend of £13,620 each year. The successful candidates will also receive a Research Training Support Grant worth £750 each year. One of these studentships is funded through the generous support of the University of Leicester alumni community. The successful recipient of this studentship will be required to engage with the University's Alumni and Development Office to publicise the award and their work with a view to the generation of additional philanthropic funds.

The Economics Department of Reed College invites applications from

The Department of Institutional Analysis and Public Management of Università Bocconi, Milan (Italy) (www.unibocconi.eu) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the junior faculty level in the fields of Economic History and Long-Run Development. The appointment will start with the academic year 2010-2011 (Fall 2010).
Each selected candidate will be interviewed at the 2010 ASSA meeting in Atlanta or in another appropriate academic venue and may be subsequently invited to give a job talk at Bocconi during the January - March 2010 period. There is also the possibility that a candidate will be directly invited for a fly-out in Bocconi.
Contracts will run for up to seven years (with no teaching obligations the first year and subject to renewal after the first four years). There is also the possibility of promotion to a tenured position at the end of that period. Knowledge of Italian is not required but applicants must be fluent in English for instructional needs. Responsibilities include teaching and, most importantly, productivity in research.

Announces a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Business History for $65,000
To be awarded for twelve months’ residence, study, and research at Harvard Business School, July 1, 2010-June 30, 2011.
The fellowship is open to scholars who, within the last ten years, have received a Ph.D. in history, economics, or a related discipline. The fellowship has two purposes: The first is to enable scholars to engage in research that will benefit from the resources of Harvard Business School and the larger Boston scholarly community. About two-thirds of the fellow’s time will be available for research of his or her own choosing. A travel fund and a book fund will be provided.
The second purpose is to provide an opportunity for the fellow to participate in the activities of Harvard Business School.
Approximately one-third of the fellow’s time will be devoted to school activities, including attendance of the Business History Seminar, and working with faculty teaching the business history courses offered in the MBA curriculum. The fellow is required to research and write a case, under the direction of a senior faculty member, to be used in one of the business history courses. Finally, the fellow is encouraged to submit an article to Business History Review during his or her year at the School.
Applicants should submit a CV, undergraduate transcript and
graduate-school record, thesis abstract, and writing sample (such as an article or a book chapter). Applicants should also state the topics, objectives, and design for the specific research to be undertaken. Finally, applicants should indicate the names of three people who will write references on their behalf. The three letters of recommendation are to be submitted by the writers directly by October 1, 2009. It is the responsibility of the applicant to solicit these letters. The fellowship will be awarded and all applicants notified by mid-January 2010. The Program in Economic History of the Economic Growth Center at Yale
University invites applications for a post-doctoral fellowship in
Economic History. The position is for one year, renewable for a
second year, and will begin on July 1, 2010.
The successful candidate will have office space in the Department of
Economics and be expected to take part in the Program in Economic
History and other activities of the Department of Economics. The
Fellow will not teach during the first year of the fellowship, but
could teach in a second year if so desired. The Fellow will be
encouraged to undertake additional training in economics and
econometrics, if that is appropriate to their research plans.
We welcome applications from scholars of all disciplinary
backgrounds, working on any period or geographical area, so long as
their primary current research focus is economic history. We prefer
applicants whose PhD is not in economics.
Fellows will receive an annual salary of approximately $55,000, as
well as standard medical insurance and other benefits. The Program
will also provide financial support for travel to archives and
meetings as appropriate.
The application deadline is November 1, 2009. The application
consists of a curriculum vita, a writing sample (which can be a
dissertation chapter or a journal article), and a 1000-word
description of the research to be conducted during the fellowship
period. Applicants should also arrange for two letters of reference,
including one from the primary dissertation adviser, to be sent to

of our decision by December 1, 2009. Candidates must have received
their PhD (or equivalent) degree no earlier than July 1, 2007.

The Alfred D. Chandler, Jr., International Visiting Scholar in Business History Program invites established scholars in business history based outside the United States to spend a period of time in residence at Harvard Business School. The primary activities of the Chandler International Visiting Scholar will be to interact with faculty and researchers, present work at research seminars, and conduct business history research. The program will encourage research concerned to relate historical reality to underlying economic theories of business development. Recipients will be given a $7,000 stipend (payable at the end of their visit), office space, an email account, phone, computer, ID card, and access to the University’s libraries and the HBS Intranet. The program requires a two-month minimum length of stay. Scholars may stay up to a maximum of six months. Applicants should indicate when, during the calendar year 2010, they would like to be in residence at the School. It is expected that the recipient will be actively engaged in the intellectual life of the business history group.
