2013-2014 Lemelson Center Fellowships and Travel Grants (United States)
The Lemelson Center Fellowship and Travel Award programs support
projects that present creative approaches to the study of invention and
innovation in American society. These include, but are not limited to,
historical research and documentation projects resulting in
dissertations, theses, publications, exhibitions, educational
initiatives, documentary films, or other multimedia products.
The programs provide access to the expertise of the Institution's
research staff and the vast invention and technology collections of the
National Museum of American History (NMAH). The NMAH Archives Center
documents both individuals and firms across a range of time periods and
subject areas. Representative collections include the Western Union
Telegraph Company Records, ca. 1840-1994 and the Earl S. Tupper Papers,
documenting Tupper, and his invention, Tupperware. In addition, the NMAH
Library offers long runs of historical technology serials like
Scientific American and American Machinist, while the American Trade
Literature collection features 300,000 catalogs, technical manuals, and
advertising brochures for some 30,000 firms, primarily from 1880-1945.
For a comprehensive catalog of objects, manuscripts, images and research
materials available at the NMAH (and other Smithsonian units), see www.collections.si.edu
The Lemelson Center invites applications covering a broad spectrum of
research topics that resonate with its mission to foster a greater
understanding of invention and innovation, broadly defined. However, the
Center especially encourages project proposals that will illuminate the
role of women inventors; inventors with disabilities; inventors from
diverse backgrounds; or any inventions and technologies associated with
groups that are traditionally under-represented in the historical
record. Pertinent NMAH collections include the papers of Victor L.
Ochoa, a Mexican-American aeronautical inventor; the papers of Dr.
Patricia Bath, an African-American inventor of a patented cataracts
treatment; the Safko International papers, documenting assistive
technologies built for the physically disabled; and the HIV/AIDS and
LGBT Reference Collections, which document innovative public health
programs and associated technologies.
The Lemelson Center Fellowship Program annually awards 2 to 3
fellowships topre-doctoral graduate students, post-doctoral scholars,
and other professionals who have completed advanced training. Fellows
are expected to reside in the Washington, D.C. area, to participate in
the Center's activities, and to make a presentation of their work to
colleagues at the museum. Fellowship tenure is based upon the
applicants’ stated needs (and available funding) up to a maximum of ten
weeks. Stipends for 2013-2014 will be $575/week for pre-doctoral fellows
and $870/week for post-doctoral and professional fellows.

Department.
Eligibility:
Anyone who has completed a doctorate in economic history or similar may be
employed as an associate senior lecturer in economic history. Applicants
should have completed their doctorate no more than six years before the end
of the application period. Applicants who have completed their doctorate
sooner will be considered if there are special reasons for doing so (1.2.1.
Appointments procedure at GU E 5 4898/10).
Basis for assessment:
Scientific proficiency will be the most important criterion in assessing the
applicant's qualifications. Publication in journals and by publishers with an
international peer-review system is highly meriting, and so is experience
from international cooperation and participation in research networks.
Pedagogical proficiency will, after scientific proficiency, be regarded as
the second most important assessment criterion. When assessing the
pedagogical proficiency special weight should be given to the ability to
implement, lead and plan education.
Administrative experience, ability to develop and manage the operations and
personnel as well as ability to interact with the surrounding society and to
inform about research and development will then be considered.
Cooperation skills will also be taken into consideration when making the
appointment.
Personal circumstances (such as parental leave) specified in connection with
the account of merits and experience, are considered in the appraisal of
merits and are.
Other information:
The appointment is a full-time position, with a time limit of two years. At
the end of this time, there will be an opportunity for promotion to senior
lecturer if the successful candidate is authorised to accept such a position
and is also deemed suitable for this through appraisal in accordance with the
grounds for assessment laid down by the university for employment in the
position of senior lecturer (4.2. Appointments procedure at GU E 5 4898/10).
The Faculty Board of the School of Business, Economics and Law has decided
(2008-12-18), for promotion from associate senior lecturer to senior lecturer
the applicant should have achieved higher competence in the subject area for
both scientific and teaching qualifications, and also demonstrated the
ability to combine research and teaching and to be active as a researching
teacher. The applicant should have attained the skills necessary to teach
both at the basic and advanced levels.
Applicants who lack higher education teacher training are expected to undergo
such or otherwise obtain the equivalent.
The salary will be set specifically for the individual.
The University promotes equality and diversity. Most of the lecturers at the
Department of Economic History are male, and so we would be very pleased to
receive applications from women.

PhD project:
Resilience and Evolution of Building Societies: An Organisational
Ecology Study, 1895-2011
This project aims to determine whether, on balance, the evolution of
not-for-profit, mutually owned retail financial intermediaries results
from adaptation or selection. The main task will be the creation of a
comprehensive database of all societies in existence from 1895 (the
first year with comprehensive records) until 2011, with annual "snapshots" of dependent (survival and change) and independent
(organisation, industry, regional and macro environment) variables.
This "population survey" will include the basic financial and
membership information that will enable combining ideas from
organizational ecology, business history and industrial organization
(Structure Conduct Performance paradigm). Specifically, ascertain
changes in accounting ratios, regional characteristics and the
creation of consumer credit as the rate of change in the number of
registered societies alters following specific regulatory, social and
economic events. The project will use quantitative (i.e. regression
analysis) and qualitative (i.e. archival research) methods.
Studentship value
The PhD bursary provides a total annual allowance of £13,000. Bursary
holders are required to pay fees and contribute around 100 hours
teaching and/or research support per annum focused on a supervisor /
research team as part of their development as an academic of the
future.

Winton Capital Management Research Associate in Quantitative Economic History
(fixed term - two years)
Winton Capital Management, Oxford, Oxfordshire
Centre for Financial History, Newnham College, Cambridge
Closing Date: 23/04/2010
Salary: £40,000-£45,000 p.a and £5000 in taxable travel allowance
Location: Centre for Financial History, Newnham College, Cambridge and Winton Capital Management, Oxford
Reports to: Principal Investigator (Dr DD Coffman) and Data Team Leader (Mr M Lett)
Duties: Responsible for critiquing existing methods used to construct long-term, high-frequency time series for historical price data and for constructing alternate methodologies for use by both the principal investigator and the firm; secondary duties to include teaching on thse Economics Tripos (Part I, Paper 3 or 5; Part IIa, Paper 4 or 7; PartIIb, Papers 11, and 6 or 7), which will be compensated separately at the regular supervisory rate.
Main job: The research associate will assist the director of the Centre for Financial History with grant proposals to create a second International Price History Commission. The first IPHC was established in the 1930s to compile and publish price histories for the United States, Britain, Spain, France and Russia. These studies were based primarily upon low frequency data sets drawn from institutional accounts. Because of the methodological challenges of constructing data series using both high frequency data (auto-correlation caused by methods used to calculate means) and heterogeneous data sources (primarily comparability), the directors of the original project jointly made a decision to sacrifice precision for accuracy. The proposed project will use those sources, and will also extend the geographical reach to include Asia and the Near East. The research associate may also be asked to assist the data team at Winton with the construction of total return indices, primarily for commodities but also for sovereign bonds (interest rates), foreign exchange, and equities. The research associate will collaborate in the preparation of publications and will be encouraged to attend conferences and to apply for small grants under his or her own name. On average, the post-holder should expect to spend two days per week in Cambridge, two in Oxford, and will have one reserved for his or her own work, though in practice time in each location will be scheduled in blocks.

Personal Specifications:
* Hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent, i.e. Sc.D. or D.Phil.) in Economics, Economic History or a related field (Land Economy, Agricultural Economics, Finance, etc). Students at point of completion are welcome to apply, but the degree must be confirmed before commencement of post;
* Highly skilled in time-series analysis and financial econometrics;
* Advanced knowledge of macroeconomics and public finance;
* Attention to detail and ability to work independently;
* Willingness to work longer hours to meet deadlines with expectation of equivalent time off later;

Future Fellowships in Australia.
The Australian Research Council recently announced round 2 of the above scheme, which funds research only positions of about four years in Australian universities for mid-career researchers, defined as PhD completion 1995-2005. It is open to overseas and domestic candidates. For the 2010 commencing round the priority disciplines include economics and history, presumed to include economic history. Priority research areas/topics are: Indigenous health and well-being; community and preventative health; environment and climate change; land-based transport systems; immigration; Asian studies; social inclusion and systemic disadvantage; and manufacturing innovation. These are highly competitive positions designed to attract mid career scholars with outstanding publication records.
If you are interested in applying for one of these positions or know someone who might be eligible and interested, the Economic History Society of ANZ would be pleased to act as a conduit. Scholars from an economics or history background might consult university websites in Australia to find suitable hosts. As Head of Economics at Wollongong, I would also be glad to hear from any interested economists.
Kind regards
Simon

The fellowship is open to scholars who, within the last ten years, have received a Ph.D. in history, economics, or a related discipline. Finally, the fellow is encouraged to submit an article to Business History Review during his or her year at the School.
Applicants should submit a CV, undergraduate transcript and
graduate-school record, thesis abstract, and writing sample (such as an article or a book chapter). Applicants should also state the topics, objectives, and design for the specific research to be undertaken. Finally, applicants should indicate the names of three people who will write references on their behalf. The three letters of recommendation are to be submitted by the writers directly by October 1, 2009. It is the responsibility of the applicant to solicit these letters.
